How Your Personal Learning Style Enhanced Your Learning Free Essays

string(159) the Gregorc Style Delineator ( GSD ) ; the Dunn ‘s Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic hypothetical record ( VAK ) ; and the Honey and Mumford Scale. At the point when my University grade class started in September I had extremely not many of the achievements important to complete it effectively. In the November of that twelvemonth an underlying task was finished which sketched out the qualities and failings present at the clasp, and proposed a program for building up those which were absent. It is currently March and the terminal of the primary twelvemonth is quick approaching. We will compose a custom article test on How Your Personal Learning Style Enhanced Your Learning or then again any comparative theme just for you Request Now So thinking back, how have I improved? Have I figured out how to infer any new achievements, or clean my more seasoned achievements? This task centers around those requests. Nonetheless, it must be called attention to that so as to answer these requests key adjustments to my anxiety of the build of review achievements needed to modify. As an outcome, more remote improvement to my idea habits, larning condition, capacity to discuss and succinct clasp course other than happened. Utilizing these newly refined achievements I will go back and examine my first twelvemonth at college and decide if or non the program I made to elevate my obtaining was solid. As is broadly rumored â€Å" all achievements improve through example, input and observing † ( Cottrell, 1999:30 ) . I would like to demo how I have gained by this build, foregrounding how this twelvemonth has made me progressively aware of my best learning way and what I have to make to more readily additionally still. Turning into an increasingly solid researcher is non something I had the option to plunk down and larn by perusing a book on overview achievements, I needed to larn to peruse my work equitably and have the option to thump usefully. I will other than explain therefore on in this task why delineating an individual securing way using just those hypothetical records by and by accessible is non ever acceptable to a researcher. That then again, discernment ought to be utilized to make an individualized and adaptative model which you are in charge of ; empowering you to â€Å" aë†â ¦learn about yourself and how you perform to your conceivable under any circumstan cesaë†â ¦ † ( Cottrell, 1999:44 ) . By forming this task sequentially I would like to demo that improvement has both taken topographic point since September, is as yet taking topographic point now. This task will get down with a short reappraisal of the study achievements effectively present toward the beginning of the class, whereupon an underlying task was finished. Crafted by Stella Cottrell end up being an extremely valuable in addition to while investigating for that task. Trusting essentially upon her Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats ( SWOT ) investigation to help with the assignment of my review achievements, it has since become obvious this demonstrated an insufficiency of capacity to have the option to impartially break down myself. The individual qualities her investigation brought to obvious radiation included puting small objectives, accepting sensibly, bantering with a companion, and arranging a physical workspace. Since along these lines, by the by, it has become certain that these were no n abilities in themselves, however rather subskills. These are for the most part properties that an individual figures out how to create so as to uplift a central review achievement ;, for example, task initiation, or general misgiving of a subject. I will come back to break down these discoveries, and the significance they played in my in the future improvement consequently on in this task. Having looked into the achievements present toward the beginning of the class, this region of the task will focus on those which have been created since. Utilizing the projects I made to connect to the underlying task three key study achievements have now been improved. These incorporate understanding capacity, organization and the capacity to discuss. As referenced before, achievements are comprised of subskills, and it is the subskills which are created to increase the study achievement. Understanding capacity and thought habits are every now and again discovered manus in manus as a joined review achievement. Last semester I did not have the capacity to quickly select the remarkable focuses in a book, due in part to my inflexibleness when perusing. The program intended to keep ease and flexibleness when looking into and perusing uplifted this achievement ( Appendix One ) . In twist, this assisted with building up the following subskills of fixation, its lastingness and going to ; each piece great as memory limit. Be that as it may, the capacity to discuss a subject with a more extensive hover of individuals was non improved straight by using both of the projects proposed last semester. On the other hand, this achievement came as a backhanded outcome of an improved focus, and more extensive perusing and accepting capacities. Going to standard classifications and workshops, each piece great as take separating in bunch work, has seen the hover of individuals with whom I am ready to discuss class content expansion. In twist, by the by, increasing the achievement of discussing has empowered more distant improvement in all the study abilities aforesaid referenced ; there are presently additional grounds to peruse generally and comprehend what I am larning. At long last, while elevating the study achievement of organization, constant examination of how my clasp could be best spent was required, turn excursion Cottrell ‘s diagrammatic portrayal of a twenty-four hours, isolated by movement, to be significant ( Appendix Two ) . Each clasp I alluded back to it I helped myself to remember simply how much clasp I might blow, and how much clasp I could free up on the off chance that I just re-organized my everyday endeavors. Of course this assisted with building up the subskills of keeping up a sorted out physical workspace ; constantly puting come-at-capable smaller than usual objectives ; and, when joined with the program to keep smoothness, my focus. The significance of these review achievements, each piece great as a record of how they have driven me to take a gander at other further developed achievements, will be examined in more thing in a ulterior region of this task. Having distinguished the achievements with which I started this class and differentiated them against those achievements which I have since learned, it is legitimate to go to next the disputable subject of securing habits. For the plan of this task, I limited the accessible obtaining typologies down to the three generally famous among teachers and students: the Gregorc Style Delineator ( GSD ) ; the Dunn ‘s Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic hypothetical record ( VAK ) ; and the Honey and Mumford Scale. You read How Your Personal Learning Style Enhanced Your Learning in class Article models After completing the GSD, of the four classs accessible, I put myself most unequivocally into the ‘Abstract Sequential ‘ gathering. The given guidelines for this gathering is the understanding that such a researcher is at their ideal in the event that they can â€Å" break down a situation before doing an assurance † , however that they would happen it difficult to follow â€Å" explicit guidelines and statutes † and to be â€Å" nostalgic † in thought. It is obvious from such solid grouping that this impossible to miss securing hypothetical record Acts of the Apostless against creating achievements and more for putting achievements. Sing every quality and flopping in twist, it turned out to be evident that I truly length each of the four of Gregorc ‘s classs. A classification which he recommends is non sound for a researcher to hold ; this averment straight contradicts the political direction of the Honey and Mumford Scale. While sing the VAK hypothetical record it unfolded that I am non a solid researcher in any one class ; being each piece ready to larn in all Fieldss they propose. Once more, they would suggest that a researcher in such a spot would persevere through difficulties as it is non positive to cross different classs. While this concurs with the GSD in its political direction, it has an a lot heavier point of convergence on pragmatic procurement. Learning can take topographic point outside of the setting of a book or other in like manner arranged content, data learned through dramatization or music, for outline, is other than substantial. At long last, of the three hypothetical records assessed, it was the Honey and Mumford Scale that was generally expansive in its assault and effectively supported a spreading over of classs. In spite of the fact that this is the most clasp eating up hypothetical record to complete, it is progressively exhaustive for being so. I pulled in front emphatically in two of the four classs, with a third non a long ways behind. Their recommendation upon such an arrangement is to work to better the classs which score generally sick. This last typology, as I have expressed, appears the most utile to any researcher in recognizing failings and qualities in larning and taking to build up those failings. The hypotheses hidden the political direction of the Honey and Mumford hypothetical record will be clarified in more thing inside a more remote development of this task, close by which will be my ain thoughts on how the securing typologies by and by accessible can be consolidated to make a progress ively close to home procurement way. To break down in more thing the main region of this task, in which the achievements present at the clasp of making the underlying task are evaluated, the develop of soul-looking through will be more distant talked about. In spite of the fact that it tends to be said now that the trust upon Cottrell ‘s SWOT examination demonstrated a failure to dispassionately investigate myself, it should other than be called attention to that my anxiety of what an overview achievement is has other than changed. In the underlying task such qualities as ‘s

Blog Archive Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Sloan) Essay Analysis, 20142015

Blog Archive Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Sloan) Essay Analysis, 2014â€"2015 *Please note: You are viewing an essay analysis from the 2014-2015 admissions cycle.  Click here to view our collection of essay analyses for the current admissions season.   The MIT Sloan School of Management bucks conventionality this admissions season and has  added  to the word count for its application essaysâ€"moving from a maximum of 1,000 words to 1,250. The school’s first essay question remains the same as last year’s, but its second essay prompt presents an interesting challenge in that the admissions committee asks you to do exactly what it does  not  want you to do in reality: write your own recommendation letter. At least in this case, the school is allowing you to do so in the light of day. And…MIT is back with its quirky optional essay, which is only  â€œkind of”  optional, as we note.  Our analysis follows… Essay 1:   The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice. Discuss how you will contribute toward advancing the mission based on examples from your past work and activities. (500 words or fewer) You may read this essay question and think, “Can I really provide examples that will lead someone to conclude that I ‘improve the world’ or ‘generate ideas that advance management practice’?” That indeed sounds like a tall order, but this essay prompt is not as daunting as it may seem, because the focus is on the future. Sloan’s MBA admissions committee is asking you to draw on past experience to show that you are prepared to support the school’s mission going forward. Rather than fretting about the latter part of the question, focus on the first part, and provide examples of how you have displayed principled or innovative leadership. The phrasing of the question is broad enough that your examples can come from the professional, community or personal sphere. All these areas are equally valid. What is important is that you offer a clear narrative, so that your reader is able to truly visualize your actions and motivations. The admissions committee wants to learn about you through your stories, not hear platitudes about management. You might share two different anecdotes and then connect them both to the school’s mission at the end of your essay. Or you could present two dissimilar anecdotes that each mesh with the mission in their own way. Whatever your approach, remember to clearly link your stories to the school’s goal statement. Before your hands even touch the keyboard, really contemplate how your experiences relate to that mission. Essay 2:   Write a professional letter of recommendation on behalf of yourself.   Answer the following questions as if you were your most recent supervisor recommending yourself for admission to the MIT Sloan MBA Program: (750 words or fewer) How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant? How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity? Please give an example of the applicants impact on a person, group, or organization. Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people. Which of the applicants personal or professional characteristics would you change? Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant. Sloan presents an interesting challenge in this essay… err… letter of recommendation.   In 750 words, you must answer all the questions presented but do so in a way that is not so systematic that you are unable to create your own structure and stand out as an individual. Note that you do not have to answer these questions in any particular order or give equal emphasis to each query. In general, we recommend that you avoid clichés by not starting or finishing your essay with a statement like “I emphatically endorse this candidate for a place in the Sloan MBA class.” Before you begin writing, consider actually meeting with your supervisor to discuss your accomplishmentsâ€"in fact, you should already be doing this in preparation for the recommendation(s) he/she is going to write. You will benefit from this individual’s objective thoughts about your performance, and that objective voice will be crucial. The one thing you do not want to do is brag for 750 words. Instead, strike a humble tone and let your accomplishments speak for you. Here we offer two examples, one bad and one good: Bad: “Jeremy is an excellent analyst, and we have given him more and more responsibility since he joined our firm. We promoted him early, because he is sharp analytically and determined to winâ€"he will do anything within the law and ethical principles to get an informational edge. We know that he will never say ‘die’ and will push himself until our investment committee is satisfied. This is a rare quality, and one we admire in him.” Although this statement initially seems glowing, in fact, it is devoid of meaning or effectiveness, because absolutely no evidence is presented of any accomplishmentsâ€"no context is provided  for what “Jeremy” has done and how  his actions  set him  apart from  others. Basically, this (terrible) writer has bragged and not backed up his claims. Instead, consider a more modest approach, where the accomplishments do the talking and the reader can easily surmise that he is reading about someone special… Good: “Before we purchased shares in Lululemon, Jeremy volunteered to visit as many locations as we would permit. He ultimately traveled to 47 locations, reporting on everything from inventory levels to the size of signage. We incorporated his firsthand experiential data into our report and made a purchase with greater confidence. Jeremy’s determination was noted in his review and led to a promotion ahead of schedule.”   As you write your letter, consistently provide examples of your actions that illustrate your assertions. This is the key to maintaining the humility necessary in writing an effective essay. Many candidates will likely be confused by the question about which characteristics they would “change.” Simply think honestly about your weaknesses and write about them forthrightly and with candor. Applicants typically make one of two mistakes when discussing weaknesses, and both involve going to extremesâ€"they either completely refuse to acknowledge any weaknesses at all or are almost insanely critical of themselves in an effort to convey (brutal) honesty. Instead, identify an attribute you feel could use improvement, briefly discuss how the problem area has manifest and then explain how “the employee” has worked to change this trait. Writing this portion should actually be a little painful or uncomfortable. If you are too easy on yourself, the admissions committee will conclude that you do not have the personal strength to evaluate areas for change and growth. And who wants a manager who is incapable of growing? Optional Question:  The Admissions Committee invites you to share anything else you would like us to know about you, in any format.  If you choose to use a multimedia format, please host the information on a website and provide us the URL.   Don’t we all just love a blank page?! (Note the sarcasm.) Answering this question is not absolutely necessary, but doing so is probably wise. How can you know for sure whether you need to? Before you start writing your response to any of the school’s essay questions, brainstorm thoroughly and create a list of experiences and aspects of your candidacy that you believe are important for the admissions committee to know about you. Then, as you contemplate and craft your essays for the first two questions, cross the ideas you choose off your list of potential stories and points. If a few items remain on your list that you believe are crucial to reveal to the admissions committee, then you should most likely write this “essay.” The admissions committee states that you may use any format for this submission, but do not feel that you must use some form of multimediaâ€"and certainly do  not  just copy and paste your creative essay for NYU Stern or your Chicago Booth PowerPoint. After you have brainstormed and determined what you want to say as an applicantâ€"what you feel the admissions committee must understand about youâ€"determine an appropriate vehicle that matches your personality and message. That vehicle just might be another conventional essay. The key is to effectively convey additional information that highlights your personality, not to win an Oscar. An Eye For An Eye Expression - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 644 Downloads: 10 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Odyssey Essay Did you like this example? The common expression an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. This refers to the Odyssey and O Brother, Where Art Thou because in both the main characters make decisions that harm them or the people around them. Some of the more thought about topics of the Odyssey are hospitality, loyalty, and vengeance. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "An Eye For An Eye Expression" essay for you Create order All these themes tie into the stories. Both the story and the movie are about the journey to get back to their family and get their wives back. Ulysses’ and Odysseus’ journeys were similar but there were clear differences. Oh Brother, Where Art Thou took place in America and the Odyssey took place in Greece. In Greece they are very welcoming to guests and when they have strangers come to the door they feed them and give them somewhere to rest. As in the Odyssey one example of bad hospitality is when Odysseus and his men went to Polyphemus’ cave, the men thought that they would be welcomed in and get to feast. But they were mistaking, because when the cyclops was hungry he would just grab two of the men and eat them whole. In the Odyssey there was also a good example in hospitality, the lotus eaters. When Odysseus and his men arrived on the island they were welcomed and got a treat right away. Although this treat, the lotus, would distract them from their real goal the lotus eaters were very welcoming. Another big lesson to be learned from the stories is loyalty. Loyalty was a big part of these stories. In Oh Brother, Where Art Thou Pete and Delmar were loyal to Ulysses’ until they found out that there was no treasure. They were furious at Ulysses. They were also mad because Ulysses only wanted their help to break out because he wanted to get back with his wife. In the Odyssey there were many loyal people to Odysseus, Penelope and all the men who went to Troy with him. The men were loyal to Odysseus because when Odysseus was getting them in trouble with monsters and gods the men kept following him. Penelope was loyal to Odysseus throughout the whole story. She was having a hard time keeping the suitors at bay while Odysseus was away. Throughout the story Odysseus knew who to keep around him and knew who to trust. But when he heard about all the suitors trying to kill his son and trying to marry his wife he was furious. Vengeance was one of the most action packed themes in the stories. In the Odyssey at the end of the story when Odysseus gets back to Ithaca. When he got back he was dressed up as a beggar and when Penelope had the competition, to string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through 12 axe heads, to find a new husband. None of the suitor were able to string the bow, but when it was Odysseus’ turn he was able to string the bow and make it through all the axe heads. So he won, but he was still angry about the suitors trying to kill his wife and marry his wife. So he traped everyone in the room and killed all the suitor with help from his son Telemachus. Another example is when the cyclops was devouring his men so he stabbed the cyclops in the eye. He did this for vengeance and to get out of the cave they were trapped in. Odysseus was a leader that you would not want to go against or disrespect. The decisions that the characters of both stories, affected them and the people around them. The ideas of hospitality, loyalty, and vengeance were expressed on a large scale in both stories. Overall, the expression an eye for an eye means when you punish someone you will be injured or penalized to a similar degree.

Use of Symbols in Yeatss Work, A Vision Essay - 3300 Words

Use of Symbols in Yeatss Work, A Vision In his 1901 essay Magic, Yeats writes, I cannot now think symbols less than the greatest of all powers whether they are used consciously by the masters of magic, or half unconsciously by their successors, the poet, the musician and the artist (p. 28). Later, in his introduction to A Vision, he explains, I put the Tower and the Winding Stair together into evidence to show that my poetry has gained in self possession and power. I owe this change to an incredible experience (Vision p.8). The experience he goes on to relate is the preliminary stage of the composition of the work itself. In A Vision, however, Yeats exhibits his poetic power as well, along with his knowledge of†¦show more content†¦He then adds numbers to the symbol, corresponding to the phases of the moon, and is able to use them to designate every possible action of thought or life. He places these in a circular shape. The whole system, Yeats writes is founded upon the belief that the ultimate reality, sy mbolized by the sphere, falls in human consciousness... into a series of antinomies (Vision p. 187). The Byzantium poems are a prime example of the antinomies at work in the individual mind of man. In many of his poems, Yeats idealizes Byzantium, as a symbol of unity in spiritual and everyday life. He writes I think that in early Byzantium, maybe never before or since in recorded history, religious, aesthetic and practical life were one, that architect and artificers... spoke to the few and the multitude alike. The painter and the mosaic worker, the worker in gold and silver, the illuminator or sacred books, were almost impersonal, almost perhaps without the consciousness of individual design, absorbed in their subject-matter and that the vision of a whole people (Vision p. 279). Radical Stage Of The French Revolution Essays - French Revolution

Radical Stage Of The French Revolution The Radical Stage of The French Revolution (1792-1793) By the end of 1971, Europe was preparing to witness the end of a seemingly triumphant revolution in France. The country was restructuring its government in a forceful and bloodless manner, while the tyrant King Louis the XVI agreed to the demands of the masses (albeit without much choice). However, due to the fanatical aspirations of men such as Danton, Marat and Robespierre,it would be only a matter of months before the moderate stage of social and political reform was transformed into a radical phase of barbaric and violent force. In their quest for freedom, equality and fraternity, the leaders of the Jacobins inadvertently turned the revolution into an oligarchic dictatorship that threatened to destroy all that was achieved in the previous two years of insurrection. The revolution took a sharp turn on August 9th, 1792. The Municipal government was overthrown in Paris and a Commune was established by the leaders of the radical forces. During this time there were continual food riots erupting in every area of the country and, with the threat of war against Austria and Prussia looming, it was vital that order was to be maintained during such tumultuous times. Although the constitution was already enshrined and the citizens had their freedom and liberties, there was still plenty of public dissent and disapproval as to whether or not these laws would help create a new government and prevent the country from breaking apart. The people had come this far and were not prepared to watch their efforts lead to failure or the restoration of an absolute monarch. As a result, the radical forces were able to gain the support of the citizens in declaring that the constitution of 1791 was ineffective and useless since it did not suit the needs of ALL the popula n of France. Moderate forces preferred to concentrate on the foreign affairs of new France, but the radicals insisted on domestic stability first. Led by the popular Danton and the merciless Marat, the Paris Commune discarded the old constitution and called for a National Convention to begin work on a new, revised version. The National Convention, divided by the moderate Girondins and the radical Jacobins, was the place where the future of the country was to be eventually determined. It was the premise of the Jacobins that they should eradicate the enemy within and secure the destiny of the revolution through the destruction of counter-revolutionary forces. They believed that by weeding out those who opposed the revolution, they could achieve their goals quickly and efficiently. The Girondins were not so quick to agree with the Jacobins, and so political deadlock begin to form in the Convention. It was not until after the September massacres, when 1200 prisoners were executed without trials, that Robespierre and his followers were able to justify their premise. They condemned the actions of the unruly mobs that caused the deaths of innocent Frenchmen and demanded that the Monarchy be abolished in order to eliminate as many of the royalists and monarchists that still remained. It was Marat with his want 100,000 heads to fall speeches that convinced the masses that those who were not in favour of the revolution had to be dealt with immediately or the revolution would never succeed. Once the Monarchy was abolished and France was declared a republic, Robespierre and the Jacobins proceeded to demand the execution of the last symbol of the old regime: Louis Capet. The Girondins begged for a stay of execution for the fallen King (in the name of constitutional Justice), but the moderate forces were overwhelmed by the people's support for the radicals and the fate of Louis remained unchanged. His death signified the beginning of a time when nationalism and radicalism would dominate the revolution. On March 10th, the Revolutionary Tribunal was created in order to prosecute the enemies of the revolution. Marat became a virtual Grim Reaper in searching out possible traitors and enemies of the republic. When the Committee on Public Safety was established on the 26th, Robespierre and his Jacobins were able to proudly look upon the reforms that they had injected into the political bloodstream of France. There was no turning back from the radical phase that the people had oluntarily entered and the momentum that the Jacobins had captured placed them in a position of highest authority and almost unlimited power. By the summer of 1793, the people of France began feeling that something had gone wrong, terribly wrong. In what would be known as the infamous

Womans eyes an american history Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Womans eyes an american history - Essay Example Baking bread is a hard task, therefore, it is not done daily – it is a weekly chore. I will also get a jug of cider or beer from the cellar for my family. This is a daily staple for my family’s breakfast; we have beer, ale or cider with our breakfast. This is especially handy when there is nothing else to serve for breakfast, as we just have a mug or two of it for breakfast before going about our daily business. At first glance the above quote may sound chauvinistic and anti-feminist, however, after reflection, I feel, I cannot disagree with the implication of this statement. Yes, it does not seem like the politically correct thing to say, but the purpose of higher education should not only be limited to becoming a professional. The role of the mothers in rearing children is celebrated much; most of us observe that it is primarily the mothers, not the fathers, who shape the worldview of their children; it is the philosophies of the mother get ingrained in the children. Therefore, it is very important for the women to receive a good, solid education. This is by no means a declaration on my part for the prevention of women in work place; on the contrary, I think that all individuals, irrespective of gender, should have the freedom to pursue their professional dreams and aspirations. A woman has just as much right as a man to become a surgeon or an attorney or a farmer, but this should not stop her from utilizing her education and training to raise children as sensible and effective human beings. In conclusion, if we rise above the gender bias of this quote, we will come to see that there is much truth to the assertion that well-educated women can raise kids more effectively than either uneducated women or, generally, educated

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Essay Example for Free

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Essay Hosts for Tomatoe Mosaic Virus include tobacco, tomato, and other solanaceous plants. TMV enters the plant cell through minor wounds. The virus can also contaminate seed coats, and the plants germinating from these seeds can become infected. Once TMV enters the cell, the virus particles disassemble in an organized manner to expose the TMV RNA. The virus RNA is positive-sense, or + sense, and serves directly as a messenger RNA (mRNA) that is translated using host ribosomes. Translation of the replicase-associated proteins (RP) than begins. As soon as these proteins have been synthesized, the replicase associates with the 3 end of the + sense TMV RNA for the production of a negative sense RNA. The sense RNA is the template to produce both full-length genomic + sense RNA as well as the + sense subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs). The sgRNAs are translated by the host ribosomes to produce the movement protein (MP) (30 kDa) and the coat protein (CP). These virus particles are very stable and, at some point when the cells are broken or the leaf dries up, they are released to infect new plants. Alternatively, the + sense TMV RNA is wrapped in a movement protein, and this can infect adjacent cells. TMV uses its movement protein to spread from cell-to-cell through plasmodesmata, which connect plant cells. Normally, the plasmodesmata are too small for passage of intact TMV particles. The movement protein (probably with some unknown assistance) enlarges the plasmodesmatal openings so that TMV RNA can move to the adjacent cells, release the movement protein and host proteins, and initiate a new round of infection. As the virus moves from cell to cell, it eventually reaches the plants vascular system (veins) for rapid systemic spread through the phloem to the roots and tips of the growing plant.

Surrendering Freedom for Peace of Mind :: Technology Technological Papers

Surrendering Freedom for Peace of Mind A glance back into history illustrates many eras that have come and gone which have left their mark on the world and its people. The industrial revolution changed the face of modern society and yet there is no comparison between its effect and that of the computer. Today, it is difficult to find an area of our lives that computer technology has not touched. The recent attempt by the longshoremen in California to strike was a prime example of the fear of computer technology that many feel. These men stated that they wanted guarantees that they would not lose their jobs as the freight industry becomes more and more computerized. Conversely, the shipping magnets are trying to compete in a world where the computer dominates the way freight is handled and they fear they are being forced to let progress pass them by. We were recently asked in class if anyone could identify a â€Å"computer free† part of our world. No one offered a suggestion since it is intuitive that the computer dominates all areas of our lives. Examples range from how we travel, the way our food is grown, what we eat, how we place restaurant orders, the size of food portions, the practice of medicine, how we shop, what we buy, how it gets to our home. There are countless other examples that could help to illustrate this point. Technologies that we could not even imagine a few short years ago are now common, accepted parts of our daily lives. We have passed through eras of information, networking and e-mail. Are we quickly headed to the point where we have lost all privacy and freedom? Are we moving to the era of personal invasion? Or are we already there? And more importantly, do we care? Have we been on the â€Å"slippery slope† so long that we have lost track of where we are headed and what we are leaving behind? One of the most troubling technologies being developed are highly precise tracking devices which can be used to detect the whereabouts of humans anywhere on earth. We are all familiar with the â€Å"teathers† that our probationers wear around their ankles. They are â€Å"free† to move around and live a relatively normal life since they can sleep at home, drive vehicles and maintain employment while being tracked by a teather officer. What Does the NSA Acronym PRISM Stand For

PRISM is an acronym for the program launched by the National Security Agency to collect and analyze massive volumes of private data stored on servers operated by Internet service providers and held by large web companies including Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google, Facebook, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple. Specifically, national intelligence director James Clapper defined the PRISM program in June 2013 as an internal government computer system used to facilitate the government’s statutorily authorized collection of foreign intelligence information from electronic communication service providers under court supervision. The NSA does not need a warrant to obtain the information, though the constitutionality of the program has been called into question. A federal judge declared the program illegal in 2013. Here are some questions and answers about the program and the NSA acronym. What Does PRISM Stand For? PRISM is an acronym for Planning Tool for Resource Integration, Synchronization, and Management. So What Does PRISM Really Do? According to published reports, the National Security Agency has been using the PRISM program to monitor information and data communicated via the Internet. Those data are contained in audio, video and image files, email messages and web searches on major U.S. Internet company websites. The National Security Agency has acknowledged that it inadvertently collects from some Americans without a warrant in the name of national security. It has not said how often that happens, though. Officials have said the governments policy is to destroy such personal information. All that intelligence officials will say is that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, or any other U.S. person, or to intentionally target any person known to be in the United States. Instead, PRISM is used for an appropriate, and documented, foreign intelligence purpose for the acquisition (such as for the prevention of terrorism, hostile cyber activities, or nuclear proliferation) and the foreign target is reasonably believed to be outside the United States. Why Does the Government Use PRISM? Intelligence officials say they are authorized to monitor such communications and data in an effort to prevent terrorism. They monitor servers and communications in the United States because they may hold valuable information that originated overseas. Has PRISM Prevented Any Attacks Yes, according to unnamed government sources. According to them, the PRISM program helped stop an Islamist militant named Najibullah Zazi from carrying out plans to bomb the the New York City subway system in 2009. Does the Government Have the Right to Monitor Such Communication? Members of the intelligence community say they have a right to use the PRISM program and similar surveillance techniques for monitoring electronic communications under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. When Did the Government Start Using PRISM? The National Security Agency started using PRISM in 2008, the last year of Republican George W. Bushs administration, which ramped up national security efforts in the wake of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Who Oversees PRISM The National Security Agencys surveillance efforts are governed, foremost, by the U.S. Constitution and are supposed to be overseen by a number of entities including the executive, legislation and judicial branches of the federal government. Specifically, oversight on PRISM come from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Court, the Congressional Intelligence and Judiciary Committees, and of course the president of the United States. Controversy over PRISM The revelation that the government was monitoring such Internet communications was disclosed during President Barack Obamas administration. It came under scrutiny by members of both major political parties. Obama defended the PRISM program, however, by saying it was necessary for Americans to give up some measure of privacy in order to remain safe from terrorist attacks. I think it’s important to recognize that you can’t have a hundred percent security and also then have a hundred percent privacy and zero inconvenience. You know, we’re going to have to make some choices as a society, Obama said in June 2013.
