To: Susan Williams, President From: Austin Dixon Subject: Recommendation Report – Workplace privacy Date: March 2nd, 2015 The purpose of this memo is to present my research and recommendations regarding workplace privacy and the monitoring of current, and new employees’ and their use of company owned equipment at work. Summary Employee privacy and the rights of employers are often debated, but to reduce an employee’s confusion and to ease the company’s potential liability, a thorough workplace policy should be in place for employees to reference. This policy should cover all forms of employee monitoring by an employer, and it should reveal the conditions that would authorize such monitoring. Research In order to understand the current problems of workplace privacy and employee rights, I have researched and studied many different sources that talk about the current privacy rights. These sources include: Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, Bureau of Labor statistics, and Harvard Law, Nolo Legal, and sba.gov. Discussion Employees are frequently wondering as to whether the activities they participate in can be seen or heard by their current employer. The answer is, yes. Employers have the right to access Internet use, emails, phone calls, and whatever else you are doing on company equipment.
